Book Summary:
The story starts with Grandpa telling the grand kids a bed time story about a town called Chewanswallow. In this town it rains food instead of water. Everyone in the town gets their food for the day in this way. One day the weather starts getting out of control to the point the the people cannot live there anymore. They pack up and leave, and they go to another place where the weather is normal.

Impressions:
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs has food as the
main theme, and it is the food that becomes the antagonist in this tale. The
story begins as a bedtime story, and it takes place in a town called
Chewanswallow with the narration being done by the Grandfather. It’s an
original idea of having food for weather; however, the plot culminates at the point
of disaster. When the food becomes out of control the citizens must find a
solution, and the only thing to do is to leave their town and start anew in a
new place. The story ends with a happy ending with everybody being saved. The
plot is very simplistic, and the pages follow one another with about the same
thing - food. The only thing that catches my attention is the creativity of abnormal
weather. The illustrations start off in black and white and as the bedtime story
begins they become colorful similar to the technique in the Wizard of Oz motion
picture.
Professional Review:
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-- In the town of Chewandswallow, the citizens enjoy the bounties of the skies, and open-roofed restaurants allow diners to catch their dinner. Unfortunately, the weather takes a turn for the worse, and there is no choice but to flee from the falling food. The detailed pen-and-ink illustrations begin in black and white, but as the tale progresses, colors join the black line details. A savory story to share over and over again.
